Bargain Box
  • How DNS Works

  • I transferred my domain to Bargain Box Hosting, but I can't get at it. I get my old site instead. Why is that? When will I see the new site?

The Internet has a system where computers called nameservers remember or "cache" both the domain name (x.com) and the actual IP address (numerical: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) of a site. This is done to speed up the process of finding sites. Without caching, each time you visited a site the whole look-up system in the graphic above would have to be repeated. The problem is, when a site moves, these servers (root and your ISP) remember where the site "was" for a period of time ranging from hours to days.

Periodically both the root nameservers and your ISP's nameservers will flush their cache and contact Bargain Box Hosting's  authoritative  nameservers to check for any location changes. This whole process is called propagation. It typically takes 24 to 48 hours for the updates to take place. Bargain Box Hosting adds your domain immediatly, but the whole world will not see your new site until all nameservers worldwide update their records. In other words, you will not be able to see your domain on our servers until both the internic root nameservers, AND your ISP's nameservers have updated their records. Unfortunatly, there is no way for us to expedite this process, as it is all automatic.
